Ive been seeing a lot of used Porsche Cayennes on CL lately for pretty cheap. This is 2006 for $8500. These were probably north of 70k brand new. Just surprised to see them depreciate that quickly. What do you think the maintenance cost on a used Porsche? Or is it “if you have to ask you can’t afford it” kind of thing.

Not worth it. Theyre being sold for a reason. The panoramic roof on the Turbo has a tendency to crack (customer went through 3 in 5 years) and theyre in the 10k range if i remember right to replace.

Duct tape doesnt work on the roof haha. You need that less leaky on a Porsche especially.

Idk, anything with less than 60k miles should be ok if you don’t mind expensive maintenance .

My parents had an 04 V6. Had pretty good luck with it except for the transmission popping. Had almost 200k miles on it before they traded it in. Suspension probably needed to be refreshed at that point. It had a clunk coming from the front. Maybe a bushing.

I’m gonna give the other take: this particular Cayenne is the 3.2l V6. No Pano sunroof. Idk if it has air suspension, but probably not.

The 3.2l is relatively reliable for a German car. They like to eat oil and coil packs, but tend not to have major issues like the turbo. Plus, it’s a tiny engine in a huge bay, so easier to work on. Cooling pipes tend not to be an issue on the V6. Terrible gas mileage, though.

If you're familiar with VW / German cars, it's not a bad buy. THIS one is a bit shady feeling, but others are out there.

Dude, don’t do it. A sales guy here at work bought one, that thing cost him so much just to maintain it. I’m not even talking about things breaking. God forbid something actually breaks.

According to my research on rennlist, stay away from the 1st Gen pre-facelift models. They have a few common failures. Stick with a 2009 or newer. The quality and reliability is average to good since 09. If you like to do your own maintenance you can save a lot of money and running costs aren’t that bad.

I’m just going to copy and paste a reply from about three weeks ago:

I had a 2006 Turbo for many years. I bought it CPO nine months after it was originally sold for $15,000 less than what the previous owner paid and it only had 1,000 miles. It was very reliable because I was very fastidious with maintenance, until it wasn’t reliable.

I had to park it for 23 days and when I came back to it the plastic coolant lines broke. This is a common issue and I was waiting for it to happen. It was an early 2006 so it didn’t come from the factory with the more robust redesign. As soon as the car was started, all of the electrics went crazy; memory seats came up with their own positions, warning lights I had never seen before flashed, the heated seats would cycle themselves on and off, and the auto-adjust headlights kept going up and down. It was possible more went on but I didn’t drive it to notice anything else. It was determined the drain pipes in the door jambs were blocked too long and water got into the fuse box, dripped into the ECU, and fried the ABS-controller. Then all of the coil packs went out after being replaced just 50 miles before. That all got sorted out and not a week later the transmission valve body failed. While it was at the dealer the gas strut that operates the parking brake failed. All of this was covered under the CPO Porsche warranty, with the exception of the coil packs.

I traded it in 2012 with 37,000 miles on it and I regularly see it at my gym. I talked with the owner and gave her my maintenance records. It’s at 120,xxx miles now. The only unusual thing she has to do is replace the air suspension compressor every year but she does tow a horse trailer with it during the summer.

It ate brake pads like nothing else and I got maybe 10,000 miles out of a set of tires. It was such a great car. I don’t really miss it, but I miss the under-the-radar performance. The M3 next to you doesn’t exactly expect an SUV to keep pace with it. Still, they earned the nickname “PIG” for a reason and the maintenance can drain you. If I had to get another one of the same generation, I wouldn’t hesitate to get a warranty, even if it was $5,000. It could easily pay for itself. I have no idea what it is like to get parts in Brazil, but it probably isn’t the easiest.

Also, the car listed has a normal sunroof that doesn’t share problems with the panoramic sunroof. Between the questionable addition of LED lights and the reflective gold key fob cover, I wouldn’t even park next to this car.
